In the season of giving thanks...

In the season of giving thanks, I took some time to reflect on what I would be most thankful for…the obvious answer would be my family. But probably, not for the reason you would suspect. I’m most thankful for my family because they are willing to tell me when I’m being an ass.

In a world of self-indulgence, where we are the center of our own universe and we clearly are always 100% right, with people that nod their heads in agreement at anything inane that we say, it’s quite refreshing to have people in your life that are willing to take your ego and shove it back into your head. Sure, it’s not the most comfortable experience to be handed a mirror and to be told to take a good look at yourself and your actions, but goodness it is refreshing once the initial discomfort passes.

And my family trusts and loves each other enough to simply say, “You’re wrong. And this is why.” As my husband recently pointed out to me, if there was a class in empathy, I’d get an “F”, it is good to be yanked out of my self-righteous soap box every now and again, and take another look at the world. It is a beautiful place after all. And if you're fortunate enough to have people in your life, who are willing to do the same, I would take a moment to say, "thank you" as that truly is a gift.
